Comedy Girl Crush Ep. 7: Rachel Bloom

CGC Ep. 7 Rachel Bloom

We return from a few months away with a home run - The incomparable Rachel Bloom joined us here at Comedy Girl Crush. Rachel is ironically unironically a triple threat; singer, dancer, and actor. Well, a quadruple threat really, because she's a hell of a comedy writer. I say ironically unironically because one of Rachel's greatest strengths is her ability to see herself truthfully. She pokes fun at herself, but she is legitimately talented. Her albums are very well produced; anyone not listening to the lyrics might think they were listening to the latest Top 40 hit.

In her writing, she excels at the juxtaposition of cheerful optimism and dark reality. This could be one of the many reasons she was chosen to write on the Adult Swim staple, Robot Chicken.

Check out her website here: http://www.racheldoesstuff.com/. You can see her videos on Cracked, College Humor, Funny or Die, YouTube, etc.

Comedy Girl Crush Ep. 6: JC Coccoli

CGC Ep. 6: JC Coccoli

JC Coccoli, what a delight! We were lucky to have JC take time out of her busy schedule to come chat with us here at Comedy Girl Crush. She has a unique voice in comedy- part tomboy, part fashionista, part political activist, all very funny.

JC gives fantastic advice that applies to those who are just starting out, and those who have been at the game for a long time. And that is to always be working. And work she does! In addition to hosting/booking a weekly show at the Public House in Los Feliz (Keep It Clean), she does stand-up almost every night. When she isn't performing herself, she's out scouting for fresh faces to bring on her show. She has a webseries on Hello Giggles called Champagne Problems, and... you know what? Just check out her site: http://www.jccoccoliispretty.com. She is, BTW. Pretty.

Coming up, you can see JC on VH1's Best Week Ever, MTV's upcoming show Blogger Girls, and she's appearing on Chelsea Lately on February 19th. So give the podcast a listen - girl has shit to say!

Comedy Girl Crush Ep. 5: Mary Holland

CGC Ep. 5: Mary Holland

On today's show, I talk with Mary Holland. She is a UCB everywoman - she performs on both the Harold team John Velvet and the Maude team New Money, and does a slew of other shows. She is fantastic at what she does and is known for creating grounded characters that people can relate to.

Mary is also a member of Story Pirates, an organization that helps kids develop their creative voice by performing the stories that children write. She's one of the brightest performers to come up through the UCB system, and I can't wait to see what happens next for her.

Comedy Girl Crush Ep. 4: Shaun Landry

Comedy Girl Crush Podcast Episode 4: Shaun Landry

Happy New Year! To start off 2013 with a bang, I bring you episode 4 of the Comedy Girl Crush Podcast. Today's guest is Shaun Landry.

Shaun is an awesome old school Chicago improviser. Bubbly, quick, and fiesty as hell, she's been improvising since before I was born. She also does stand-up, has acted in films like Milk (playing Gwenn Craig), and has performed sketch and improv all over the world. Her long time group, Oui Be Negroes, is  known as the first African American Improv/Sketch Comedy Troupe in the country.

So give it a listen. We chat about Charles Manson, racist mother-in-laws, and getting drunk with Woody Harrelson. Plus, we get to hear the woman behind the buttons and knobby things that records the podcast, Miss Leann Bowen.

Here's to 2013 and bringing you more interviews with funny funny ladies.

Comedy Girl Crush Ep. 3: Heather Anne Campbell

Comedy Girl Crush Podcast Episode 3: Heather Anne Campbell

Episode 3 is up! I just adore Heather Anne Campbell, and I'm so honored she came on the podcast.

Heather is a powerhouse of experience. She's learned from nearly every major school of improv/sketch comedy. We're talking Groundlings, UCB, iO... she's been a member of Boom Chicago, Groundlings Sunday Company, and was in Del Close's last group as a director, Spoo.

And that's just improv. Heather has a full and illustrious writing career. She wrote on SNL, on Incredible Crew (coming soon), and she's currently writing for Fox' Friend's Night ADHD.

What sold me on Heather is her involvement in The Midnight Show. I remember the first time I saw her in the show... she blew me away with her talent and commitment. I recently had the opportunity to take a sketch/improv class Heather was teaching as part of the Miles Stroth Workshop. The big takeaway from Heather is to be fearless and to GO FOR IT. Whatever you're doing, just go for it.

So, give the 'cast a listen. I guarantee you'll feel inspired and crush just as hard as I do.

PS- Last week Heather and Miles broke the record for UCB's Cagematch. For 45 weeks, they slayed the other teams competing for improv glory.
